This CVC “Splat” Phonics Game is a fun way for students to practice reading CVC words and building fluency. This set also includes some CCVC words as a way of differentiating and challenging students who are ready for these kinds of words.

The set includes 9 Splat cards and 63 word cards, which allows for up to at least 5 players. This game is a good center activity that provides lots of laughs. My family even loves playing this game.

I use these writing cards with my first grade class as a Work on Writing activity during our Daily 5 rotations.

They complete these in their writing journal which is just a composition notebook.
I number the cards on the back after I print them on card stock and laminate them. They write the card number on their paper so I know which one they've done.
I have these out for a month or so, then put them away for a month or so, and then pull them back out.
It is one of the Work on Writing activities they LOVE.
ENJOY!!

Opinion Writing: Favorite Insect
Feb
28
2014

This activity is connected to CCGPS ELACCKW1: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are "writing" about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book. The topic for this opinion writing packet is "favorite insects." These opinion writing activities are great to put in a writing center for students to choose which pictures to use to give their opinions about. This pack includes a title page with directions and 5 pages with each page containing picture choices of two insects. The five pages include: ladybug/bumblebee, ant/dragonfly, cricket/fly, grasshopper/cockroach, butterfly/mosquito. Each page includes two picture choices for students to choose between to tell which they think is the best. Each page says “In my opinion (it shows the two picture choices) _____are the best because…,” then it has six blank lines for students to write on to tell why they think their choice is the best. Students love telling which item they like the best. This activity encourages students to give the reason why they think their choice is the best. Teachers can also use these writing activities as a whole class activity. Assigning these activities for a homework assignment can include parents in helping increase their child’s writing skills. However you choose to use these activities, I hope your students develop a love for writing.

Emergent Reader: My Rr Book: Sight Words (I, like, the)
Feb
28
2014

This emergent reader, My Rr Book, is connected to several CCGPS listed below. This 12 page book is designed so that you can copy the book, cut in half, staple, and then it is ready for use. The 12 pages consist of a title page “My Rr Book,” eight pages including a black and white picture that begins with /r/ at the top of each page and a sentence under the picture. These eight pages include the sentence “I like the (then the word to match picture is shown, such as “I like the robot.”). The 8 pictures included are rabbit, raccoon, rainbow, rain, rake, ring, robot, and rocket. At the end of the book, there are three optional activity pages (for differentiation) which may be included depending on the level of your students. You may want to include all or some of these for intervention pages or extension activity pages. One of these optional pages requires students to circle the uppercase and lowercase letter being used in the book, one requires students to write 5 uppercase and 5 lowercase letters, and the last one requires students to write 5 words beginning with the letter. For enrichment, students may also add a second sentence to each page giving more details about the picture. Students can benefit from this reader by tracking print, identifying spaces between words, identifying particular letters of the alphabet, recognizing sounds (beginning, middle, and ending) in each word, and reading sight words and grade level text. For extension activities, students could add another sentence to each page giving details about each picture shown. The black and white pictures allow students the opportunity to color the pictures. This reader is great for guided reading groups, homework, or literacy center activities.

ELACCKRF1a. Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page-by-page.
ELACCKRF1d. Recognize and name all upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
ELACCKRF1b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.
ELACCKRF1c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print. ELACCKRF3a. Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or many of more frequent sounds for each consonant.
ELACCKRF3c. Read common high-frequency words by sight.
ELACCKRF4. Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.

Math Journal: Measurement (length & height)
Feb
28
2014

This 6 page math journal focuses on measurement correlating with the CCGPS: MCCKMD1 and MCCKMD2 using the vocabulary length, long, short, tall, longer, shorter, taller, and height. The journal prompts contain items such as trees, people, buildings, cars, pencils, and more. This journal contains 10 days of math prompts. There are two journal prompts on each page. The pages are designed to be copied and cut in half. Five of the prompts are related to length and five are related to height. I hope your students enjoy drawing pictures to match each journal prompt as they become proficient in using the measurement terms when describing their picture to you or their partner.
