WORD WALL OF COLORS for Back to School
Nov
30
2011

A word wall is a collection of mini word posters that you put on display e.g. on your classroom wall, so that your students get a daily reminder of the spelling of each word. This color word wall not only shows the spelling in either American spelling or British English spelling, but it also is color coded so that your students can immediately connect the color names to the color that they represent. Also, each word card has a picture of a color coded everyday object. This would encourage them to see that all objects around us have one of these colors.

Color Matching Activity:
Attach double sided tape to the back of each color card and let your students label items around the room by sticking each card to an object of a matching color! If some students cannot read as yet, it’s OK; he/she can still do this activity because they are labeling things by color.

Instructions:
Just print on card stock paper and cut out the color cards. OR
To make them more durable, after printing (on regular white paper), laminate each page, then cut out the cards.
Remember, only print on white paper so that the true colors seen here will show.

The "All-Things-Picture-Books" Shop

2011
The skills and strategies teaching packets I create are for use with specific picture books. In essence, I am trying to create a "teacher's manual" to go along with the book. This means that I have studied the picture book and have come up with all the skills and strategies I think work best with that book. The packet includes thinking maps, charts, and or leveled questions to go with each skill and strategy. I also look for any writing activities and or grammar ideas that lend themselves nicely to that book. My goal is for you to have everything that you need to quickly, and easily create an effective, differentiated lesson.
Gingerbread Word Family Sorting Cards
Nov

2011

This set of word family cards has 6 word families with 5 cards in each. The following word families (different ones from the fall set) are represented: -ap, -at, -ed, -in, -og and -um. Two words in each set have blends or digraphs. It also comes with a blank set of cards so you can add your own.

I created this set to use in my classroom. I usually have a set of cards with magnets attached. I put them on my filing cabinet and mix them up every morning. During center time, someone just can't resist sorting them back!

You can also use these during guided reading time when presenting a new word family. Additionally, they can be cut apart, separating the onset and rime to make word puzzles.

This product addresses the following Common Core Standards for Kindergarten:

F.K.1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.

RF.K.2. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Recognize and produce rhyming words.
Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words. (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)
RF.K.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ.

This product addresses the following Common Core Standards for First Grade:

RF.1.2. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
