Product Description

This pack consists of a lot of the reading and writing activities I complete with my grade 2 class when we learn about insects. The activities would also be appropriate for Grade 1 (with support or for teacher modelling) and 3.

It is made of before, during and after reading activities and writing organisers/organizers. I have included both spellings of orgnisers/organizers and behavior/behaviour on separate pages throughout the document.

This is what's included:

Activating Prior Knowledge
1. Insects KWL
2. Insects KWL student foldable booklet
3. Webs x 4 versions (for 'insects', 'bee', 'ants', 'butterflies' and a blank version)
4. Schema File - students record their schema on these slips and file into an Insect Schema File. After learning about insects, students update their schema file, by recording what they've learned.

Before Reading Activities:
5. Anticipation Guides x 3 (for Time for Kids: Butterflies, Time for Kids: Ants and Science Vocabulary Reader: Incredible Insects). Prior to reading, students read the statements and record whether they think the statement is correct or not. During and/or after reading the text, students discuss their responses and record what they think after reading. This can be done as a whole class or small group activity.

6. Questioning Web - do a picture walk through text looking at photos, diagrams, tables and maps and then recording any questions students' have.
During Reading Activities:

7. Retrieval Charts -students record information about the bee, ant and butterfly on this table. I've also included a blank version so you can add in any insects you want (or use for another topic entirely!) and change the headings.

8. Comparison Matrix x 4 (one to compare body parts, one for movement, one for where the insects live and 2 blank versions). Use these matrices to compare a range of insects to look for similarities and differences.

After Reading Activities:
9. What Have I Learned: a follow up to the Questioning Web.

10. Fact and Opinion: after reading a text, students record facts they've learned and their opinion on this organiser/organizer.

Ongoing Activity:
11. Observation Journal with 2 different covers. The observation pages come with Ant and Butterfly headings, as well as a blank version to add in any insect you want to observe.

Research Notes/Information Writing:
This pack comes with a couple of ways for students to record notes on an insect they're researching which could also be used as writing frames for actual report for those who need more structure. I've mostly used the same headings throughout the documents: Classification, Appearance, Life Cycle, Diet, Habitat, Predators, Behaviour/Behavior and Interesting Facts. A sentence explaining each one is included under the heading.

12. A Notes table with the above headings over two pages.

13. A half-size booklet (cut the pages in half) that can be stapled together. One page per heading.

Other Activities:
Most of these can be used during the research phase, as an alternative to the above. These activities are not insect specific so I actually use them quite a lot as we learn about different insects.

14. Draw a Labelled Diagram with a word bank

15. What does an insect look like? writing paper (use the labelled diagram to help)

16. Life Cycle diagram

17. How does an insect grow and change during its life? writing paper set out into First, Next, Then, Finally frames.

18. Habitat - Draw and write about an insects habitat.

19. Interesting Facts - write 4 interesting facts about an insect.

20. Design Your Own Insect - combine the parts of 2-3 insects to design your ideal bug! Write about how they have adapted to live in their environment, protect themselves and find food.

21. Is it Really A Insect? Use those cheap, fake insects you get from shops to sort them on these 2 sorting charts. When you look closely at them, some are not insects - only 1 or 2 body parts, legs coming off the abdomen etc. The first sheet has prompts for students to sort their bugs (e.g. does it have 3 body parts). The second doesn't have the prompts and asks students to draw and write about one of the bugs they sorted into the Yes and No columns and write about why they sorted it there.

22. True or False: cut out the body parts and glue them into the True/False boxes.

23. Insects Tree Map - can, have, are

24. Venn diagram x 3 (compare insects/spiders, ants/bees and a blank version).
